Gradient Mesh

"Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil"

Does this face belong to someone who is disfigured?... Perhaps it's just a reminder to be mindful of what we say, what we watch, and what we listen to... Are we not influenced by what we see and hear? Don't our words impact others? Should we not be concerned with these things?

Being overwhelmed by social media in our modern age, I've pulled away from many consumer habits and societal norms. I don't want a simple life, just a good one. This piece is about living a life free of celebrity gossip, fake network news, and negative social media. My goal is to make more time and room in my life for greater more worth while pursuits.

The simple idea of my piece is right on the surface... The illustration is of my face without the features needed to hear, see, and speak. There is still one eye though, because I don't want to live completely blind to the world. The colors are natural, as I'm referring to the natural day to day life we live and not some dream world or another dimension.

The initial inspiration for this piece came from recently remembering some childhood memories of my Father, who would tell me bible stories and try and instill his morals and values in me. After the initial idea, I did a search for other images related to this topic... https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=speak+no+evil+mask&FORM=HDRSC2

I felt that a great majority of the images in my search had a dark quality to them. My goal was to share this simple message in a more neutral way. However, I will leave it to the viewer to further interpret it's meaning.

The Gradient Mesh Project was created in Adobe Illustrator. The original photo was a "Selfie" taken with my iPhone. By creating layers and outlining the lines in the photo, I was able to apply a gradient mesh to blend and shade the Self Protrait.
